Blood Bank Sections And Labs

Donor Section

DONOR SECTION

We collect blood only from healthy, voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors. Meticulous screening of all blood donors is done by highly qualified & trained Medical Officers and counselors to exclude those donors with high risk of exposure.

The blood donors are attended by team of counselors who assist them through the entire procedure, screens them if they are fit for the blood donation and also satisfy the doubts raised by the donors.

We have ultra- modern sophiscated recliners for the utmost comfort of the Blood Donors coming for blood donations. The room is well equipped with Air conditioners and music system with an attached refreshment area for rest and relaxation of the donors.

PLATELET APHERESIS

PLATELET APHERESIS

Plateletpheresis is a medical procedure of removal of platelets that involves directing the donor’s blood through tubing to a machine which separates blood components. Blood is withdrawn through a needle and mixed with an anticoagulant (citrate) to prevent clotting. The separation of blood components is done by a centrifugation process in the machine. Platelets are removed, while the remainder of the blood components are reinfused back into the donor. All the tubing and needles used in this process are sterile and disposable. The entire process takes around 50-60 minutes.

Blood Bank has fully automated Apheresis machine- Trima Accel by Terumo Penpol for the purpose
  • World’s best fully automated cell separator for Single donor platelet concentrate
  • In-process leucoreduction
  • Keeps donors Safe
  • Donor discomfort is reduced and the donation experience is improved with single-needle procedures

The room is equipped with television and music system for the entertainment of donors.

RED CELL SEROLOGY LABORATORY

RED CELL SEROLOGY LABORATORY

Serology is the scientific study of serum where Blood grouping, atypical antibody screening and compatibility testing are performed. We have fully automated equipment like NEO IRIS by IMMUCOR and ORTHO VISION. Compatibility testing of recipients and donor’s blood is performed using Column Agglutination Technique (CAT) before issuing the blood. Other special procedures performed are Rh phenotyping, antibody identification and platelet cross match.

    Ortho Vision Analyzer
  • Fully automated immuno-hematology analyzer by Ortho Clinical Diagnostics for Blood grouping, cross matching & atypical antibody detection
  • Uses Column agglutination technology
  • Can process up to 42 samples at a time in an hour
    NEO IRIS Analyzer
  • We are the first Blood Bank in the entire Central India to have launched this high - end technology which has the unique ability of Platelet Cross – matching.
  • Fully automated immuno-hematology analyzer by Immucor for Blood grouping, atypical antibody screening & identification.
  • Can process up to 224 samples at a time in an hour

TTI

TRANSFUSION TRANSMISSIBLE INFECTIONS (TTI) TESTING LABORATORY

Donated blood is tested for evidence of transfusion transmission infection like antibodies to HIV 1 and 2, Hepatitis B virus Surface Antigen, antibodies to Hepatitis C virus, Syphilis and Malaria parasite. It is only after these tests blood can be used for patients.

Blood Bank has fully automated testing equipments like Architect i1000 by Abbott (Chemiluminescence Immunoassay - can process upto 100 tests/hour) and for ELISA.

Any unit of blood that shows evidence of carrying an infectious disease is discarded and donor is notified and referred to physician/ ICTC.

COMPONENT PREPARATION LAB

COMPONENT PREPARATION LAB

100% of collected blood is separated into different components like Red cells,Leuco-reduced red blood cells,Plasma and platelet platelet concentrate after the whole blood is spun in centrifuges.Yearly around 44,000 blood components are prepared.

Blood Bank is fully equipped with best quality refrigerated centrifuges, Cryofuge 6000i by ThermoFisher which can separate 12 units of whole blood into different components. Controlled centrifugation speed and temperature ensures viability of blood components.

Blood Bank has Sterile Connecting Device which connects tubings of two different units of blood under closed sterile condition which helps to prepare smaller aliquots (portions) of components according to patient’s requirement.

COMPONENT STORAGE

COMPONENT STORAGE

Blood components are stored at controlled temperature & environment in accordance with their requirements.

  • Red blood cells are stored in refrigerators maintaining temperature between 2-6°C for 35 and 42 days.
  • Plasma is stored in deep freezers at - 40°C for 1 year. Due to rapid freezing, more than 70% of clotting factors remain viable and active.
  • Platelets are stored in platelet incubator maintaining temperature between 20-24°C under continuous gentle agitation for 5 days.

QUALITY CONTROL LABORATORY

QUALITY CONTROL LABORATORY

Blood Bank has adopted integrated system of Quality Assurance covering all matters which influence the quality of blood & components. Quality Control testing is performed on blood components to measure their quality as per DGHS and NABH guidelines. Blood Bank has Automated Blood Cell counter & Coagulometer for performing the quality testing of different blood components.
